background: This gene encodes a protein belonging to theglyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase family of enzymes thatplay an important role in carbohydrate metabolism. Like its somaticcell counterpart, this sperm-specific enzyme functions in anicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-dependent manner to removehydrogen and add phosphate to glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate to form1,3-diphosphoglycerate. During spermiogenesis, this enzyme may playan important role in regulating the switch between differentenergy-producing pathways, and it is required for sperm motilityand male fertility. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. Function: May play an important role in regulating the switch between different pathways for energy production during spermiogenesis and in the spermatozoon.
